Nose Piercing Aftercare - 5 Steps That You Must Follow
So, you just got your nose pierced or you’re about to get it done and need to understand how to properly care for that fresh hunk of metal inserted into your snout? Taking care of a nose piercing is relatively straightforward. It is a common piercing that can be treated quite simply. However, the important thing is to adhere to these care instructions to ensure that this type of body piercing heals quickly and that no complications, like infections, occur. Follow this step by step guide to perform proper noise piercing aftercare.
Be mindful of the swelling
A fresh nose piercing is little more than an open wound with a piece of metal sticking out of it. There will be some swelling at first. This is the body’s natural inflammatory response whenever it has suffered trauma. Don’t be alarmed when your nose begins puffing up. That’s why the initial nose piercing was oversized so that the swelling wouldn’t pop off the nose ring.
Wash your hands
This nose piercing aftercare recommendation should already be a common practice for people. When handling your new nose piercing, make sure your hands are clean from dirt and bacteria by washing your hands before touching the piercing site. Germs can be introduced to the piercing like this and can lead to an infection that slows down the healing process.
Clean piercing site with saline
Use a saline solution to gently clean the piercing and the surrounding area with a fresh cotton swab. Do this about 2 to 3 times a day to ensure that proper hygiene is being promoted. The saline can either be store bought or made at home with a mixture of 4 tablespoons of non-iodized salt, preferably sea salt, and 1 gallon of distilled water. Flush the piercing site with this mixture to kill off any troublesome germs.
Keep away the makeup
This nose piercing aftercare tip is more for women than men and it depends on where your nose piercing is located. When applying makeup, try to prevent it from coming into contact with your fresh piercing. Makeup not only could cause a possible infection but also can obstruct the healing process if it came into contact with the piercing site.
Do not change your jewelry until fully healed
Refrain from needlessly removing your jewelry during the healing process. Taking out your starter piece of jewelry for any span of time is not recommended. The piercing site can close rapidly. Spare yourself the extra pain of having to get re-pierced by keeping it in at all times. However, it is advised that you rotate your nose piercing occasionally. This allows you to clean parts of the piercing that have been in contact with the exposed skin. Remove any bits of biological material that may have adhered to the piercing at this point to prevent infection.
Nose piercing aftercare is simple to perform. Remember, it’s your body so take care of it by following these steps. Consult with your piercer should any questions arise.
