Nose Screws - 5 Questions Answered

Body piercing can spruce up a tired old appearance in a very noticeable way, especially if that piercing is located on your face. Nose piercings are growing in popularity by leaps and bounds. Young people, especially girls, opt for nose piercings because they’re easy to get and can really compliment a face nicely. However, not all nose piercing jewelry is the same. Nose screws are common forms of nose piercings that look very similar to traditional nose studs or nose rings except for one big difference. As with studs or rings, the screws used are often sterling silver jewelry or white gold.

1. So what’s so special about nose screws?

Unlike other forms of nose jewelry, a nose screw just twists and turns right into your piercing hole. This means it is not only easy to take one in and out but the jewelry is all one piece, unlike a standard stud where there is a small metal clasp that keeps the body jewelry in place.

2. Does screwing it in hurt?

Not any more than a nose stud or nose ring. The corkscrew shape of the nose screw allows you to turn it in until it fits snuggly on your nostril.

3. Wouldn’t the screw poke the inside of my nose?

Nose screws were designed to not complicate a piercing. While the extended corkscrew looks like it would poke the interior of the nostril, it is designed in a way not to do this. Instead of being an elongated screw, much like a wood screw, a nose screw is more compressed, like a spring. The part of the jewelry that is inserted is shortened enough to where it doesn’t poke the nostril.

4. Can I get a nose screw as my first piercing?

No. Piercers typically use a ring or stud for the first piercing. This is done for utilitarian purposes. One of the biggest obstacles to piercing is making sure the piercing site properly heals. Part of the healing process is the body’s natural inflammatory response when trauma occurs. This involves swelling. That’s why initial piercing jewelry is oversized so as to allow the nostril to swell and expand without popping off the jewelry and causing potential complications with the healing process.

5. How long do I have to wait to get a nose screw?

Average healing times for a nose piercing differ. While the site may be healed within 2 weeks, many piercers recommend you to keep your initial piercing jewelry in until 6 to 8 weeks. This allows for the hole to become more resilient. Removing your initial piercing too early can lead to a healed up hole quite quickly. Follow the recommendations of your piercing provider about when to get new jewelry.

Hopefully these answers have cleared up any confusion you may have had regarding this type of nose piercing jewelry. Remember, follow the advice of your piercer and follow up with him or her should any questions arise.
