The tattoo, once a symbol reserved only for men, has now become a popular me of expression for women as well. In fact, tattoos for women are in many areas more popular than tattoos for men – sometimes by as much as twenty percent. The familiar “Mom” tattoo on the shoulder has slowly given way to a broad diversity of designs that encompass everything from tribal patterns to idyllic scenes of dolphins playing.
When it comes to tattoos for women, designs run the gamut of expressive illustration. As noted, the tribal bands around the upper arms, wrists, and ankles are extremely popular. But so are more complicated images of unicorns, butterflies, and faeries. Flora and fauna still hold sway for many women, but tattoos for women have also moved into the realm of extreme body art.
Because the stigmas that once prevented many women from getting tattoos have all but disappeared, tattoos for women are becoming bigger and bolder with each passing year. It is no longer uncommon to see women with tattoos on very visible parts of the body, including the neck and even the face.
