Zodiac Tattoos - 3 Reasons For Choosing This Type Of Tattoo
Zodiac tattoos are unique in their expression of ancient symbols and images associated with heavenly bodies and constellations. There are twelve different zodiac signs, each of which can become a unique tattoo design. However, the interpretation and understanding of each different sign varies greatly depending on the person who has the tattoo. Here is a list of three common reasons why people opt to get a zodiac tattoo design.
1. Astrological reasons
The zodiac is a venerable and ancient way of interpretation and cataloguing the night sky. Ancient astronomers looked up into the heavens were found ways to not only chart the course of prominent stars but to also attribute mythological symbolism to the outlines that they saw. The fact that the zodiac was widespread in the ancient world, stretching from Greece to India, is that cultures were fascinated by the movements of the stars. One of the most common reasons why people get zodiac tattoos is that they wish to express a deep seated passion for astrology. Again, this is astrology not astronomy. The former is more rooted in mysticism and imagination while the latter has more in common with science. Astrology, by and large, is a realm of pseudo-science that still draws people in who look for a greater understanding of the universe than science can readily provide. Often, a zodiac tattoo that embraces astrology is made up of the entire zodiac, not just one aspect or symbol.
2. Birthday
Zodiac tattoos can also represent the birthday or birth sign of the inked. Each different zodiac symbol alludes to a particular segment of time. For example, if someone was born between May 21st and June 20th, they have the birth sign of Gemini. Getting an individual zodiac tattoo, as opposed to the entire zodiac, is often associated with celebrating a birth sign. This can either be the person with the tattoo or it may be a tattoo inked in honor of a child or a partner. Couples often get matching birth sign tattoos to symbolize their union.
3. Personality
Zodiac symbols, such as the Bull, the Lion, the Centaur, are attributed as bestowing certain personality traits to those who are born underneath that sign. This spins out of astrology but is seen in a more practical rather than philosophical sense. Horoscopes are an expression of understanding the attributes of people with birth signs. While this type of tattoo may also recognize a birthday, it can also symbolize the traits that a person with that birth sign expresses. Again, this is not a form of science is more of a belief system that people wish to celebrate.
This list is by no means exhaustive or expansive but it is a short list of common reasons behind zodiac tattoos. The design may vary from classically inspired symbols of the constellations to more modern interpretations of the entire zodiac chart. The decision by these tattoo designs are ultimately up to you and how you wish to express them.
